Contemporary designs and Skyspaces in a St. Louis backyard.
When an outdoor-oriented homeowner wanted to add a modern pool house to their backyard, we designed a structure that complements the existing limestone pool deck and creates a space to gather. The two-story pool house celebrates the owner’s maximalist style with dissimilar forms and materials combined to create a contemporary spatial experience. The house’s circular roof cutout is inspired by the artist James Turrell, whose work incorporates Skyspaces, or rooms with sharp-edged apertures in the ceiling that seem to bring the sky down through the opening.
“With two teenage boys and time slipping away, I wanted to create a retreat at home for our family. When planning to build our poolhouse/guesthouse, I knew we needed the right team to make the long process enjoyable and successful. This was a big project for us, and we wanted it to be unique, thoughtful, and comfortable. Ann and Dave made it come to life with their clever vision, expertise, excellent subcontractors, and enthusiasm.”
